Date.com
The initial profiling process is quite thorough, you'll be asked about your religion, your pets, etc. We actually like that. The site design is efficient and "no-frills", the advanced search has a lot of filters and saves your favorite search settings. The free membership allows you to browse through all profiles and send a "I'm interested" notification. The full membership features include access to chat rooms, higher rank in search results, audio-video messaging and of course full access to the e-mail and IM features.

Dating.com
The first impression we had was a lot of information squeezed in a 800 pixels wide panel. Birthdays, best matches, visitors to your profile, who's online now, even a "success-meter" based on the completeness of your profile are all at hand. You can send messages and cards already with the free account. There's a useful "hot list" and a perhaps even more handy "block list", just in case. Paying members have access to the chat area, can send unlimited messages and, at the highest level of membership (there are three!) can even have access to an "online psychologist".

Soulmate.com
Soulmate.com is a site for users interested in starting a "serious relationship". It has the same look&feel of the Dating.com service, and possibly shares the same user network.

eharmony.com
More than a dating site, this is a true matchmaking service. The initial "Relationship Questionnaire" is huge, and asks hundreds of questions. Definitely worth if you want the site to find you the most suitable matches, but be ready to spend at least 20-30 minutes filling up the forms. After the questionnaire is over, you'll get a free personality profile, and in order to see your matches you'll have to subscribe to one of their plans.

Update: Three days after we uploaded our "randomly-answered" questionnaire with obvious fake answers they deleted our (free) account. This is actually great news: it means that they really do check each and every questionnaire and they weed out fake accounts to keep the high quality of their service. Thumbs up!

sugardaddyforme.com
"Wouldn't you love to be treated like a King maybe for the first time in your life?" This pretty much explains the scope of the site: rich men meet gorgeous young women, and viceversa, and rich women meet gorgeous young men, and of course there's the gay/lesbian version as well. With the free account you can browse the user base, send a "kiss", but in order to send e-mail and chat you'll need to subscribe. There's a neat calendar feature to allow other members to see your schedule and when you're available to meet. Users can also upload "private pictures", but you'll need a special password from them in order to see those locked pictures. Site graphics are adequate, could be better though.

Trial members can browse, see who's online, add users to their hot list and send a "wink". Full members can send e-mail, ecards, chat, see who viewed their profile, view photo album, request hidden photo access and access a weekly love horoscope (they seem to put much emphasys on this feature). The graphics are nice, and there's a very useful "tips" section, available to trial users as well, where you'll find lots of dating advice like "How to Get That Perfect Photo", "Dating in your 40s - back on the dating scene", "Where to go to find Love", etc. In theory every profile gets checked, in practice we saw at least one profile where the user spammed her phone number all over the place, even in places where she was supposed to tell about her favourite movies etc. Therefore, account screening could be improved.
